Main Types of Safe Traffic Diversion

Traffic diversions that are deemed safe can be categorised into two.

The first type of traffic diversion is done by moving the traffic on the existing carriageway under improvement. An existing roadway may be used for the passage of traffic, as long as treated shoulders are placed on the side where construction is not in progress yet. The shoulders must be treated with a thick granular base course and coated with a bituminous surface dressing. However, if the existing two lanes will be widened into four lanes, then the additional two lanes must be done first so that the traffic is diverted into them before treating the existing carriageway. Once the road construction is done, the treated shoulders and debris must be dismantled and eliminated, respectively.

The second type of traffic diversion is conducted by moving the traffic along with a temporary diversion. Road stretches that cannot be used for the passage of traffic must be constructed with a temporary diversion. The makeshift traffic diversion should have a carriageway and earthen shoulders on each side alongside a specific provision for road crust.

Regulating the Safety of Traffic Flow

To ensure that the flow of traffic is regulated, a couple of things must be done.

For one, contractors have to install flags, signs, lights, markings, and flagmen on the surroundings of the involved road construction area so that all vehicles and pedestrians will be protected and informed of the situation. Additionally, areas on which the traffic will deviate from its usual path may utilise pavement markings or painted drums.
